Breast pain can have a multitude of causes including but not limited to stress, caffeine intake, hormone imbalances and abnormal changes to the breast tissue. There are a number of ways to investigate the causes like lab work and imaging. If you are experiencing breast pain, contact us for a consultation to discuss potential causes and treatment options and to have a clinical breast exam with a licensed provider.
Many women hear the words “dense breast tissue” but don’t have an understanding of what it means. Density can be assessed through clinical breast exam by a licensed provider and imaging modalities. While density does not immediately mean something is “wrong”, dense breast tissue should be addressed by a breast specialist. If you have been told you have dense breast tissue or have a question about the density of your breast tissue, contact us for a consultation for a breast exam and recommendations for screening.
Mammography is the oldest and most trusted form of breast imaging for screening . Women aged 40 and older are recommended to have annual mammograms to screen for breast abnormalities and it seems the guidelines for screenings change every year.
“Abnormal mammograms” can have many causes and do not necessarily lead to a cancer diagnosis however patients who have abnormal mammograms should have more in depth follow up to ensure they are being screened properly. If you have ever had an abnormal mammogram or are being told your breast imaging is abnormal, it is recommended that you are followed by a breast specialist for future screenings as early intervention is the best way to beat a cancer diagnosis. Contact us for a consultation with a dedicated breast specialist to include a clinical breast exam, potentially ultrasounds in office, cyst aspirations, biopsies or breast MRI ordering if indicated.

A breast lump or mass can be found on self breast exam or clinical breast exam with a licensed provider. Sometimes a lump or mass cannot be felt and is only found on breast imaging such as a mammogram or ultrasound. If you have found a breast lump yourself or have a breast lump found on a breast exam with your primary care provider, it is recommended that you see a dedicated breast specialist for appropriate follow up. Contact us to set up a consultation with one of our licensed breast specialists for recommendations unique to your needs.
An abscess is a swollen area within body tissue that contains an accumulation of fluid which can easily become infected. Often times, abscesses are drained in office and treated with antibiotics. Breast abscesses are often referred to breast specialists because of the delicacy of the breast tissue and skin. If you suspect you have an abscess or lump on or around your breast area, contact us to schedule an appointment with a licensed provider who specializes in treating the breast tissue and skin.
Discharge from the nipple can have a variety of causes including lactation, infection or underlying changes in the breast tissue. The discharge can be milky, bloody, clear or various colors which are important details to note. Both men and women can experience abnormal nipple discharge and when it occurs, a licensed medical provider should be consulted. If you are experiencing nipple discharge, contact us for a breast exam and testing by a dedicated breast specialist.
A biopsy is the process of removing tissue from the body and sending it out for testing to determine the cell types that make up that tissue. There are multiple types of biopsies that apply to the breasts, most of which are done in office at The Breast Place.
- Core biopsy – done with a needle under imaging (ultrasound, mammography or MRI) guidance with a clip placed as a marker in the center of the area that was biopsied.
- Punch biopsy – biopsy of the skin closed with a suture.
- Fine needle aspiration – done with a needle under imaging guidance where fluid is removed from a cystic area.
- Excisional biopsy – done under general anesthesia in the operating room to remove an entire area of tissue.
If you have a lump or mass or cyst in your breast tissue or you visually notice change to your breast, contact us to schedule a consultation with a dedicated breast specialist for a clinical breast exam to discuss your individual needs.
