Hello, Warriors! Welcome to The Breast Place blog and thank you for taking time out of your active schedule to visit! We appreciate our readers to the utmost degree, as we do our patients. Our offices are open and our staff is prepared to answer any questions you may have about your health, your breast cancer risk, and how to reach your aesthetic goals.

At The Breast Place, we offer several oncoplastic surgical procedures, such as natural reconstruction, nipple-sparing mastectomy, Hidden Scar™, implant reconstruction, and breast lift with or without reduction. Oncoplastic surgery is distinct from both breast cancer surgery and plastic surgery–though you initially assume oncoplastic surgery to be a mixture of both. Rather, the aim of oncoplastic breast surgery is “to achieve good aesthetic outcomes for women with breast cancers who would have unacceptable outcomes with other BCS techniques, and in addition, enable breast-conserving surgery for larger breast cancers.” While breast cancer surgery prioritizes the eradication of cancerous tissue and plastic surgery prioritizes the cosmetic appearance of the breasts, oncoplastic surgery takes both of these aspects into account when planning for the final outcome. You can find out more information about what to look for in an Oncoplastic surgeon here.

In our last blog, we discussed how to rejuvenate dry hair! Hair can become dry and damaged for a number of reasons, including age, environmental conditions, hair care habits, and even your physical health. Additionally, certain cancer treatments such as chemotherapy can cause your hair to become dry and brittle. There are measures you can take at home, such as cutting back on heat styling, eliminating the use of harsh shampoos, and even adjusting your diet. If you’re interested in learning more, we encourage you to check out our last post!

Before we continue with today’s topic, we’d like to make you aware of what we have to offer at The Breast Place this month. Can you believe it is already September?! Today, we’ll be discussing face rollers, what they’re for, and their potential benefits. If you’ve come across any skincare videos, especially in the last few years, you may have seen a face roller incorporated into the routine. It is also likely that you have seen these products in stores. These handheld tools are used to massage the face and generally have a smooth surface that can be made of a variety of materials, such as crystal, stainless steel, or gemstones. Some are dual-ended, with both rollers varying in size. Of course, face rollers are not a requirement for your skincare routine, but they do have benefits that just might convince you otherwise. If you are interested in learning more about face rollers, you’re in the right place. Let’s get started!

Although face rollers seemed to have gained popularity fairly recently, they have actually been around for thousands of years. Although the exact origin is unknown, they are said to have been used by Chinese elites in the Qing Dynasty, all the way back in the 17th century. The wands were made of jade, a semiprecious stone that was mined in China and highly sought after. Today, these tools can be made out of different stones, such as rose quartz or amethyst. If you believe in the different healing properties of crystals and stones, this could impact your decision on which roller to use.

But what do face rollers actually do? Since using a face roller is basically like massaging your face, you are likely to get the same benefits as you would from a massage, such as reducing stress and relieving tension. Additionally, using a face roller improves blood circulation to your face by stimulating blood flow. This, in turn, can help make your skin look brighter. Perhaps one of the biggest reasons people use face rollers is because they are known to decrease puffiness, especially under the eyes. This is because massaging the skin with the face roller stimulates lymphatic drainage. The lymphatic system is part of the immune system and drains fluid to be transported back into the bloodstream. Any kind of obstruction within that system can cause fluid buildup, and this can be remedied through massage therapy. Some people have incorporated this massaging technique into their everyday beauty routines– Thanks to face rollers!

The regular use of face rollers may also contribute to a more youthful appearance. A 2017 study showed that facial massage has been linked to some anti-aging effects. Although the study did not look at face rollers specifically, the use of face rollers is a type of facial massage. Facial massage increases collagen production, which can prevent wrinkles from forming. This can be especially effective when paired with the use of an anti-aging cream.

Another reason that some people use face rollers is that it is cooling and soothing to the skin. Some stones, such as jade, are naturally cold. This means they will feel cool upon contact with your skin. For other stones that are not naturally cold, some people prefer to store their face rollers in the refrigerator so they will feel cool to the touch. It may feel relaxing, especially if your skin is irritated. Although the benefits of this are yet to be determined, some people simply like the way that it feels. There’s nothing wrong with pampering yourself! An added bonus to using face rollers is that they can help you evenly distribute your skin care products. In fact, face rollers are generally used with skin care products such as moisturizers, serums, or oils. This not only helps the tool glide across your skin seamlessly, but it can also help deliver the product deeper into your skin.

Now that you know all about the benefits of face rollers, you may be wondering about the proper way to use one. Don’t worry– We have you covered!

  • Wash your face! Face rollers work best on clean skin.
  • Apply a facial oil, serum, or moisturizer to your face. This will help lubricate the skin to allow the face roller to glide over it easily. You don’t want the tool pulling at your skin; That can actually lead to wrinkles!
  • Most people start at their neck and roll upward. Make sure to roll up, not back and forth. (Rolling back and forth does not stimulate blood flow.)
  • When rolling on the face, roll outward from the center of your face. When using in the undereye area, roll away from the eyes to decrease puffiness. Remember to be gentle with your skin! Don’t roll too aggressively.
  • Roll from your jawline to your ear on each side and from your forehead up to your hairline.
  • Use the face roller for about 5 minutes– Using it for longer won’t give you different results. It only needs to be done once per day or every other day.
  • Make sure to clean your face roller after each use. Wipe off excess product and use a gentle face wash or soap to remove bacteria. You can also use rubbing alcohol.

The bottom line is that face rollers can make a great addition to your beauty regimen if you want to give your skin a little extra love!
